Sebastian Kamae – Chicago Session

Bringing you a hidden gem from this month’s releases I’d like to highlight Sebastian Kamae’s recent album ‘Chicago Sessions’. Sebastian is a Dutch producer who traveled all the way from Amsterdam to Chicago in order to work with the city’s most notable up-and-comers. Adding another layer of life to his laid-back production Sebastian recruited some of his favorite collaborators for the lyrical aspect of this project.

This album is for listeners of Kota The Friend, Smino, and Saba! These tracks are an absolute necessity on your chill alt-hip-hop playlist. Crafting a blend of Chicago-inspired beats and vocals from various local artists equates to the soundtrack of a laid-back summer. Appearing on the tape are rising stars such as Femdot, Drex Carter, and Pivot Gang’s Frsh Waters. This album depicts a consciously curated representation of Chicago’s immensely talented underground scene.

Getting into the music I’ll start by sharing my personal favorite track, ‘Off The Record’ featuring Mother Nature. The Chicago-based duo brings delicate feminine energy to the track as they gracefully lay down both soft and equally strong bars. The production feels as though your floating along to the sound of their voice, jazzy and instrumental vibes. Additionally, the tape features Drex Carter on ‘400’ the most popular tune so far. The production here feels like stars in a night sky. Sonic twinkling elements against Drex’s laid-back steady flow. Two more essential listens are ‘Shapeshifter’ and ‘Falling Out Of Love’, although the whole tape is worth your time!

Sebastian Kamae has genuinely given a gift to hip-hop with his production skill and ear for talent, these pairings couldn’t have been curated better. Sebastian has a diverse skill set and finds interest in a variety of cities emerging sounds. I look forward to seeing where he takes his talents next, and who his future collaborators may be. Make sure to go ahead and stream ‘Chicago Sessions’ to pin your next underground favorite.
