Philip Brooks – I’m So in Love With All of My Friends

We’ve share Philip Brooks’ music in the past with their nostalgia ladened sound mixed with their emotionally charged lyricisms making you feel like the main character in your very own coming of age movie. One of my favourite tracks released from 2020 so far has been their single I’m Getting Lonely with heartfelt lyrics about not being the person you dreamed you’d be it really did hit home for me and they’re continuing their fine run of form today with the release of their latest track I’m So in Love With All of My Friends.

“I wanted to write a love song for my platonic friends, because deep platonic love is so underrated in my opinion,” Philip Brooks begins to explain. “In the past I was always seeking affection and I famously fell for my friends all the time – like, that was basically my brand. Every time I took the courage to be candid to find out if my crushes felt the same, people kept disappearing from my life until I found myself all alone. Feeling both emotionally and physically distanced from my loved ones over the last few months led me to reflect on that, and writing this song helped me manifest that deeply loving people platonically is okay and enough and actually it’s really awesome. The track means a lot to me, especially because so many of my super talented friends are on it.

The shimmering production is utterly lush and the way it grows the euphonic climax that has so much grandeur to it that it will consistently send chills down your spine. Brooks’ tenderly poised vocal evokes nothing but passion as they lament over having lost friends in the past by admitting feelings for them, “I wonder if my friends love me the same as I love them / … / but sometimes those things are better left unsaid.” This is just bedroom pop at its finest and it is no surprise that it comes from one of the most captivating artists around right now. Stellar stuff once again.
