Vanessa Gimenez – Doing Better

Previously the lead vocalist of the Bristol based band Swimming Girls, Vanessa Gimenez performed across the country at festivals like Glastonbury and venues like Shepherd’s Bush Empire, but it’s only since going solo she’s seen her creative potential reach new heights. Her debut Make It Rain had us on tenterhooks with her vocal shining like a diamond and the synth ladened production being on par with pop royalty. Now with Doing Better she looks back at her own difficult personal experiences with a raw lens and an emotive prowess that gives off heavy Pure Heroine Lorde vibes. Prepare to break your replay button.

The frank pop piece features blunt lyricisms with references to lovers playing mind games in an attempt to one up the other and domestic abuse with the poignant lyric, “So I tell you about my mother, and how she’s still trying to recover,” packing an almighty emotive punch. It’s a post break up anthem that rivals Taylor Swift as her semi-whispered harmonies evoke a strong sense of pain as you immerse yourself within her struggle and find yourself within her authentic narrative. It’s dream pop with a dark twisted edge.
