The duo are known for breaking down societal conundrums and complexities over an unorthodox production of electronic flairs and glitch like beats that enthral you from start to finish. It’s a menacing pop fantasy and they embrace that in their latest single Follow that they’ve described as a sinister Vengaboys, and we totally see that.
“Follow is a fantasy,” 0171 begin to explain. “It’s all about a longing to just let go and believe that everything’s fine, everything’s perfect, even if you know it’s a lie. This is the fantasy world that pop music provides – a world where you really can just take someone’s hand and drive off into the sunset with the top down. We know it’s fake, but we might as well believe in it.”
This duo is re-defining what pop is and the more I listen to their music the more I become a fan of them. Here they’ve taken the joyous feeling of early 90’s pop and flipped it on its head to form a sound that is both fresh yet nostalgic. The beats are intoxicating and something I expect to hear in multiple clubs once the lockdown is over, the vocals blend beautifully together and the warped pop melodies are just the cherry on top.
