If you’re a fan of Sinead O’Connor and have been looking for the millennial equivalent then look no further than Detroit born singer songwriter Southwick. She released her debut single Lying in the Darkness a few weeks ago and just recently she dropped the music video which was directed by her label’s founder Shamir Bailey.
The track itself is truly stunning with Southwick possessing an celestial vocal that is instantly recognisable and soars over these ominous synths and deep percussion that creates a beautiful contrast. It slowly builds throughout with the ending being a grand climax to a gorgeous song, it’s actually something I can imagine being at the end of a tv show as we hit that dramatic cliffhanger ending. Combine all that with poignant lyrics and a sense of evocative emotion and you’ve got a superb piece of music.
Then you’ve got the music video that is simple in it’s concept but genius with it’s execution. Southwick just singing the song whilst staring into the camera immediately makes a lasting connection that just makes the message of the song hit home. Very reminiscent of the legendary music video for Nothing Compares 2 U.
Lying in the Darkness is a stunning debut that instantly makes an impression and Southwick is definitely an artist to keep a close eye on.
