Daughter’s lead singer, Elena Tonra, recently announced a solo project that goes by the name of Ex:Re (pronounced X-Ray) and it’s certainly caught a lot of people off guard. In fact she dropped her debut track, Romance, out of the blue followed by the announcement the full ten track LP was going to be released via 4AD a few days later. A great few days if you’re a fan of Tonra’s soothing vocal.
The debut track has a familiar melancholy style to it with the electronics creating an ambient yet tender atmosphere with Tonra’s compassionate vocals adding an intimate feel to this track that makes it feel as if Ex:Re is singing this too you in an empty room. The palpitating production is the clear distinction between Daughter and Ex:Re but the soul stirring lyrics remain that will have the listener questioning things about themselves they never thought they would.
Like Tonra’s past music this makes an immediate connection with those listening that captivates them and leaves them feeling speechless. She has that power to bewitch you, it’s like she is a living breathing piece of art that has people looking in pure awe.
“Although the record is written for someone, a lot of the time it’s about the space without that person in it. In every scenario, there’s either the person in memory or the noticeable absence of that person in the present moment. I suppose it is a break-up record, however I do not talk about the relationship at all, and he hardly features in the scenes. He is only felt as a ghostly presence.” – Elena Tonra
