When I heard Patrick Martin’s debut, Cinema Love, earlier this year I remember being so incredibly impressed by his emotional encapsulating vocal that I stopped working so I could fully absorb this experience. Then I listened to the lyrics and realised how freaking special he was as an artist and that’s exactly why he is on this list because this man can not only writing hooks that wriggle their way into you head but also poignantly placed lyrics that stay with you long after the song is over.
He’s an old soul with a young spirit as is demonstrated throughout his debut EP Wonder Years with it, in my opinion, being one of the strongest pieces of work of 2019. The whole EP manages to be both euphoria inducing with this sense of excitement sprinkled in throughout but also offering this sorrow through his poetically placed lyrics (specifically in Again) that will have you reaching for the tissues in no time.
This B-Unique Records artist was working at an Apple Store last year and now he’s had, arguably, one of the best years for a new artist in recent memories. If 2019 is just a glimpse at his talent then 2020 looks like it’ll be the year of Patrick Martin.
