Soul really is a timeless genre. To this day artists like Otis Redding, Sam Cooke and Prince, to name few, have their music listened to by thousands of people on a daily basis from multiple generations all relating to their music. Classic soul hasn’t been around for a while now but Otis Simpson has a goal to bring it to the forefront once again and his music is a prime example of how it should be done.
Fusing classic soul principles with modern technology Army manages to offer both a throwback and a vision to what the future could hold for the genre. Simpson’s vocal is powerful with it delivering high levels of emotion that is reminiscent of James Brown in his prime and honestly that vocal is the star of the show in this track. Whilst the production offers an empowering atmosphere it’s Simpson’s raw, vivid and passionate vocal that makes this track shine like a diamond in the rough.
It’s the classics reborn and an Army couldn’t stop us from praising Otis Simpson’s attempt at reviving the old school ways in a modern setting.
