However no artist has created such a unique sound from the genre like the Chula Vista, California, based artist Jackie Mendoza. You won’t hear anything like her anywhere else.
De Lejos is a track about dealing with a long distance relationship with Mendoza’s vocal capturing this tender emotion effortlessly and taking you on this journey with her. The minimalistic approach to the production helps enhance the track further with the gentle ukulele chords clashing with the sonic soundscape to create this beautifully jarring juxtaposition that is a joy to hear. You never know what’s going to happen next in the track and that is exactly what makes it so enthralling.
Can we understand what she’s saying? No. Does that stop us from loving everything Jackie Mendoza is doing? Absolutely not. She is one of the most exciting things to come out of the Latin music scene in a long time.
