Girl in Red – Rue

-

Girl in Red is without a doubt one of the most exciting new talents coming out of Norway right now and it’s easy to see why by just looking at her back catalogue of music. She’s consistently struck chords with listeners, me included, with her openness to discuss queerness and mental health that has allowed so many people to feel connected to her and, simultaneously, allows her music to be a source of comfort for those who might not have that support network around them.

She’s a testament to what an artist can do and she continues to demonstrate that today with the release of her spellbinding new single Rue. When asked about the song she said, “I wrote this song for my loved ones who are affected by my mental health. i will always try my best to get better for them, and i am forever grateful for their presence in my life.

The track is named after the character in HBO’s Euphoria and the parallels she noticed between them both (minus the drug addict part) but more importantly the piece starts a new chapter in the journey of Girl in Red. Here the sound outgrows the bedroom pop sound she’s often been labeled and into exciting new realms of escapist fantasies that are reminiscent of the likes of Lorde and Florence + The Machine. It’s just, I have no words really to describe the majesty this track offers and I genuinely think this will go down as being one of the best tracks of 2020.
