90’s Kids is a very apt name for this new alternative pop band with their sound managing to have a strong sense of nostalgia to it whilst also having these modern pop sensibilities to it. Pushing to the future whilst preserving the past, yep that’s 90’s kids like me in a nutshell and it’s nice to see this quartet are doing something similar. Freak Me Out, their latest release, is both fresh and familiar whilst simultaneously being a bop that was made for car rides with your friends, there’s a music video idea.
“Freak Me Out” is our favorite song we’ve written to date,” The band begin to explain. “It’s actually the first song that we totally self-produced, and it showcases everything about what 90’s Kids is – where we’ve been as a band, and where we’re going in the future. It was fun to dig into the idea of a relationship where there’s so many warning signs, but you’ve already gotten so deep that it hits you all at once and you’re totally freaked out. We wrote the verses first and the chorus just came so naturally – it just felt like the “you really freak me out!” hook needed to be this big payoff to what the verses are saying, and it came out exactly as we intended it to. We are really proud of every piece of this song, and the journey it took us on as songwriters.”
The tracks subject matter revolves around the red flags we see within problematic relationships, a pretty sad subject matter which is why the more uplifting pop melodies create a great juxtaposition between the pair. The hook is the highlight of the track though, ever since hearing it I’ve been belting it out when I’m out running, indoors cooking or even having a shower, genuinely it just has a way of wiggling its way into your head and refusing to leave. Cracking piece of alternative pop here.
